The Biosand Water Filters

Biosand water filters are an extremely simple and elegant solution to an extremely serious problem: access to clean drinking water. We chose to use biosand water filters in the Maijuna communities after many hours of research into a wide variety of options. The issue that the Maijuna face surrounding drinking water is not the abundance of water, but rather its quality. Each of the four Maijuna villages is located on a river; the quantity of water is astounding, but the quality is less than acceptable for human consumption. Given this, and other social and environmental factors, biosand water filters proved to be the best fit. All of the following criteria were met: they are culturally acceptable, economically affordable, and easy to build, use, and maintain. Most importantly, they work incredibly effectively and therefore promote the health and well-being of the community.

Filter Design and Function:

The biosand water filters used in this project are constructed out of repurposed thirty gallon food-grade olive barrels and PVC piping and then filled with gravel and sand. All components are locally sourced and the filters have no moving parts, making them easy and intuitive to use. The filter utilizes a combination of biological and physical barriers that prevent pathogens from passing through the filter. Within a week, a biological layer develops in the top few centimeters of sand, which removes waterborne pathogens. Each filter can provide an ample amount of clean water for a family’s drinking and cooking needs.
