The Maijuna:

The Maijuna, also known as the Orejón, are an endangered and marginalized indigenous group of the northeastern Peruvian Amazon. Today, there are only 450 Maijuna individuals left living in four remote villages: Sucusari, Nueva Vida, Puerto Huamán, and San Pablo de Totoya. Their communities lack basic infrastructure and health services and they obtain their drinking and cooking water from contaminated rivers. This results in a wide variety of serious health problems, including dysentery that can lead to infant mortality. To help affect positive change in their communities, Maijuna community leaders reached out to us for help in solving the water and health challenges that they face. To help reduce water related health issues, we are working to conduct hygiene and sanitation workshops as well as build biosand water filters in each of the approximately 90 Maijuna households.
